  • Recommendations on where to go?

    • Sad news!

      First off, Thank you RT and everyone for many many years of service and support. Any website I've ever build was with Joomla and RT since the begining.

      What recomendations does anyone have for where to go the next time I need to build a site or upgrade? It was nice to only have to purchase the template and not an annual subscription like many other places are changeing now.

      I don't like page builders, so Gantry was perfect. Integrated into the joomla modeling perfectly, not just a big, clunky, page builder.

      SO, Let's have it. Where is everyone going from here?

    • I started building Gantry sites with Grav once J3 ended. I've decided I'm going to use the Typhoon Theme on one of my next builds. For sites I'm not handing over to a client to manage regular Grav is very similar to Gantry from a development perspective... it's all TWIG and YAML and PHP when you need it, so I'll keep building there. If Typhoon turns out to be user friendly that may be my go-to for sites I hand over.

      I build a lot of stuff in WordPress now too, as opposed to Joomla. Especially when some complex functionality is needed and there's a robust WP plugin already on the market (ie WooCommerce). In that, I like WPBakery and Elementor... I prefer Elementor between the two as it's got a bigger open source community and just more features/widgets in general.

      I've had good luck with custom Shopify dev as well... their Liquid templating language is very similar to TWIG and their APIs are second to none.

      I have large client sites still running J3 and G4... PHP 7.4 is still very secure. I expect I'll have sites running G5 and PHP 8.3 for years to come; but for new dev I'll be using Grav, WP, or Shopify.

    • Thanks Matt, I was actually wondering what you were building in now.

      There are so many options now, and I'm all for new stuff, but when it's time to build, and you're charging by the hour, it's nice to know what you're doing. lol

    • Totally. Using Gantry on Grav was helpful in the learning curve years ago... and I think it still could be... the Grav docs are beyond amazing (so are Shopify's API docs), and they have Algolia search to help sort it all... these days ChatGPT has read the docs and understands TWIG/YAML structures and PHP very well... I don't think there's any harm in building new Gantry sites on Grav, at least for a little while... and if it becomes absolutely necessary you can move all your generated HTML from a RocketTheme Template/Gantry into static Grav pages, or even into static Grav Page Templates... you obviously won't have any of the Gantry admin options, or Particle options, but if you needed to upgrade to PHP 9 or something in the future and remove Gantry (I have no idea if Gantry would remain compatible with PHP 9+; probably not), I think it's very doable and for specific things you could even (mostly) copy+paste the TWIG/YAML (being mindful of TWIG 1 --> TWIG 2+ changes) in Gantry Particles into Grav Page Template options.

      Hi Matt,
      What do you mean by that? Is the End of Life information for Joomla and PHP exaggerated? Even for sites with online registration or payment?
