There could be a whole lot of reasons for a slow site, the biggest for me was my hosting company. I switched to a different one and things are faster. I also used an extension called page cache which limits the amount of times that your browser tries to access your data base. Also make sure that your images are optimized for the web. If you have pictures that are 1 megabyte each that will definitely take up time and bandwidth.

I find that using the rss function slows a site down.

You can also try turning gzip compression on under the server settings. Make sure that your server has gzip compression first but my guess is that it does.
