News site: Questions & advices required

Posted 17 years 1 month ago
    • Hi everyone,

I'm starting a new web-site from scratch. It's a electronic magazine, lot's of content - news, photos, videos, forum, and a bunch of other stuff.

      My questions are:
1 - VERSION: Should i do this in 1.0 or 1.5? Most of the components i've seen so far are for 1.0, like Pony Gallery ML (ideal for my photos section).
2 - FREELANCE: Any of you at RocketTheme is willing to do custom work? Component, extension change, creation?
3 - COMPONENT: Anyone has iJoomla News Portal component? Is it worth it?
4 - COMPONENT: Anyone knows any other good gallery component like Pony?
5 - FORUM: I already have a forum running, it's SMF (i chosed it because i saw it here and liked it). It works great, but now i've read that i can only use with Joomla 1.0, any good forum for 1.5, can i migrate the database from my current SMF forum?

Really would like to know what you people think.
      Thanks,
      Asimo

    • 1) Sounds like you've answered this one yourself, if you need extensions that are only available for 1.0.x, use that.

      2) Yes there are freelancers here.

      3) I believe that iJoomla is being used here (correct me if I am wrong). That says a lot.

      4) There are plenty of gallery software choices and there a several threads here discussing that.

      5) Again, there are several threads on this subject here, try the advanced search feature. Fyi I'm hearing a lot of good things about phpbb3... but there isn't a bridge yet.

    • Thanks for your help!

1 - The thing is, wont i regreat it in a near future? I've looked arround and some people say 1 thing, other say a different thing. Considering that i'm planning to launch this project in the summer, should i look for anoher extensions that work with 1.5?

2 - Well please contact me. I'm looking for professional people, no newbies. Please message me with work examples. I'll require custom coding work, coding adaptation, css and other work.

3 - Where is ijoomla being used here? In frontpage? If anyone has any other examples of this component use, please let me know.

      4 - I've searched but i'll check again, thanks!

      5 - I've searched but i'll check again, thanks!

    • I'm in the same sort of boat, new website and the dilemma of 1.0 or 1.5. I decided to bite the bullet and go with 1.5. There are a few components out there that I would like to have used, and the site is unfortunately running in legacy as I still cannot find a forum component that I trust that is 1.5 native. I figure that if I have anything specific that I need that I cannot create, I'll outsource it.

i think 1.5 is just that bit more future proof.

    • Is there any real problem for a web-site to be running in legacy mode?
I understand that this mode doesnt take advantage of all the possibilitys of joomla 1.5, but it seems to be a good way to go. I mean, start the web-site in legacy, and hope in the future you can run it with native components.
