    Setting up Joomla adminstrator console

Posted 17 years 1 month ago
    • Hiya all
I am a very novice novice and am completely at a loss as to how you go about setting up a joomla website. Granted, I've chosen a rocket theme template but, boy oh boy, I cant get my head around all the geek language.

I've searched the joomla help site but the advice assumes that I'm already set up with a joomla site. Thing is, I'm not and really want to know in dead simple language what I need to do!!

Is there anybody out there that can help?

    • First thing would be of course to install Joomla.

    • OR... use a RT Rocketlauncher package which installs Joomla, the template of your choice and all the demo content.
Might be the best way to go for someone new to all of this.

    • 1. Have a good idea about the content and organization of your site.
      2. As quickly as possible, try to get a grasp of the basic terminology; Section, Category, Article, Menu Item and the various Menu styles - Section Blog Layout, Section List Layout, Category Blog Layout, Category List Layout, and Module.
      3. Take a look at your template's Module layout. (Chromataphore attached) This will give you some idea about the various positions where content can be placed, in addition to the standard Menu Item layouts.

IMHO, the easiest way to start is by creating two installs, one with all the sample content, and one without.

I'm sure that some people might think I'm crazy, but when I first started with all the sample content published, I couldn't find my way around, what was mine, what wasn't, etc.

Using the install with the sample content as a guide, you can start to create your own site.

The upside to this is you can get started right away adding your own content and placing where you want without having to unpublish or delete the sample content as you go.

The downside is that the site will be completely empty when you start, so you will have to add modules that aren't included in the basic install and create your own modules as you go - which is really easy.....

Oh, you'll also have to create Sections and Categories before you can publish any articles.
