    Your opinion is requested

Posted 17 years 4 weeks ago
    • Hello Rocket Themers!

I'm making -- or will be shortly -- a new information site. As such I need a template that looks professional. It wont have a ton of images so I don't need the image switcher/rolling thing that is in Vortex (for example) (Is that called Rok slide??). But there may be times when a diagram or something is shown.

Also there will be ads (aren't there always) to try make a little money from it. So there will need to be space somewhere for that

It is more an informative / news style approach I will be taking. I don't need tons of graphics but I also don't want it to be plain text only.

So. This is where you come in ;)

What template would you recommend? If you could give me a few suggestions, that would be awesome. I have gone through the demo on every theme numerous times and now have theme-overload!

Bear in mind I originally considered making the site in wordpress rather than joomla. Primarily because it will be a blog of sorts and wordpress is substantially faster at loading that joomla.

      Thanks for your time

    • To me, that is personal preference, any number of RT templates could be adapted for the task that you describe. The template is simply the clay, it's up to the creator to mold it into exactly what he/ she desires.

      Not helpful, I know. ;)

      Best of luck.

    • True enough but this "creator" values other's opinions before she molds the clay :)

Further to that I'm not the worlds greatest designer so apart from moving bits around here and there, I'm not the greatest at the design side of things. So ultimately the site would look remarkably similar to the original template. I'm by no means skilled enough to alter the template in such a way as to have an end result that is bearly recognisable from the original.

    • Are there any sites that you would like to kind of emulate the layout or design of?

    • Go through the themes, from the Top Menu > Features > xx Module Positions

While one template may have a certain look and feel, the module placement may not suite what you have in mind for content layout.

Some templates have a choice between left and right columns, some allow for both by default.

Some templates have no module positions above the FrontPage content, some have several.

IMHO, it's better to have module placements where they need to be.

I started with Media Mogul but wound up switching to Chromataphore for just that reason.

Any one of the templates can be tweaked to get the right color combinations after that but changing module positions requires a lot of template editing.

    • Thanks for your input JEM618 :)

The problem with Chromataphore is that colour picking thing. I don't want people messing with colours all the time, I'd rather they focus on the content. If I added that template I know people would spend all their time playing with the colour selector thing instead of reading the content.

So the modules may be good in that template but the colour picker thing and the associated huge drop down box attached to it doesn't appeal at all

    • That's what I thought, I would never use Chromataphore for that reason either.

But, once you've got your colors all set up you just turn it off in the template manager - takes about three seconds!

Honestly, I chose Chromataphore for the module placement, not the color chooser.

If I could not have turned it off, I would have chosen another template.

    • Oh you can turn it off? Hmm OK that opens up new possibilities.

Can you turn off that great big huge drop down thing too?
