What is the best practice for moving a RT/Joomla site to a new host?

    • Any advice on the best method for transferring a Rocket Theme/Joomla site from one host to another? Is there a check list posted anywhere.

      Thanks.

    • JoomlaCloner will save you so much time and aggravation, you wouldn't believe. I'm so sorry I didn't buy it years ago.

    • Thank you very much!

I knew someone out there had done it before, and had a better plan than the one I was thinking of.

That's a great endorsement. Does it somehow guide a person in making all of the MySQL stuff work after it's moved? I've attempted moves on our server before (by compressing the public html folder, moving it to another folder and uncompressing it) and it seemed to me like there was a lot of tinkering needed to get everything in those files to point at the stuff it should.

Arghh... I may not be using the right terminology even on this deal but if you can sort-of kind-of guess what I'm trying to say and tell me whatever is relevant I'll be appreciative. Thanks! :-)

    • JoomlaCloner takes care of the "tinkering" which is why I'm so annoyed with myself for not shelling out the money 2 years ago.

You tell it where you're moving to, what the ftp and db credentials are, and it does the rest.

It's also good for backup-and-restore. So I can set up a standard website with my usual tools and extensions as a base, backup, make a new site, move it, and restore the original standard base site for my next project.

Donna--they should give you a commission because you've almost made a sale for them. My only concern is that it's going to take some 'know-how' to handle the db credentials and I don't know anything about that. How tough is that?

Oh yeah, and one more thing... if I am moving a site to a different domain name can it do that too? Like, let's say, from mysite.com to mysite.net? It's all on the same server... but I'm having to move domain names.

      Thanks a bunch! :)

    • JoomlaPack could be another solution. It's open-source and easy to install. With this component, you can create a full site backup which contains an installer (derived from the standard Joomla installer). Use this to restore your backup on another server.

You can also make a backup of only your database if you want.

      Worth a try !

    • When I say "credentials" I am referring to your login and password. You have to create the database on the new site and JoomlaCloner will take care of populating the database.

This is what you need to tell it:

front-end URL of the new site
      ftp login
      ftp password
      database name
      database username
      database password
database location (e.g., "localhost" unless you're using Godaddy)

Thanks, Ives. So w/ that one if I move my site to a new domain name will I have database problems? Or will it help make everything reconnect to the right spots?
