Hi, folks. I'm about to build a new site and am an amateur. I've built only one CMS site before
http://www.flyfishtalk.com
(used the Fire template and love it). I mention the skill level here because it might influence your answers.
The site is going to lean heavily on a forum, photo album, community builder, calendar, and if possible something like Groupjive. I've definitely chosen the Populus template.
I used rocketlauncher to put the 1.5 version up but haven't touched it yet. Now that I consider these needed components I'm wondering....
Am I better off switching to the 1.0.x Joomla version?
I know I mentioned a specific template a lot but am thinking this post is more general since it's basically about components integration. Any wisdom is gratefully received.
A day of mucking around with social networking components in 1.5 convinced me that as an amateur creating a site for a non-profit, I'll stick with the older version of joomla for now. There just aren't enough options yet for 1.5
Don't worry about not using 1.0x it's still a really good release and comes with a lot of extensions.
I still use it most of the time for my customers sites unless they "just" need a small site with information and file handling. The administration area in 1.5 is a lot better though, but oh well
Another thing good about 1.0x is that there are a lot of good tutorial videos out there for newcomers to Joomla, great to link to those if members / customers got questions.
Diane, I am waiting for more extensions to become compatible before using 1.5 myself - 1.0.x works just fine for me for now!
Cheers
