a great news site in its day was internet gazette
then came along sporticus
if you look at some of the popular news sites most of them use the same concept - two columns and main content
i think what i'd like to see is a very white (newspaper like) template with the integrated functionality of the extra modules we're now getting out of RT and with the ease to change around colours or modules and the css it can be quite unique or tailored to your specific subject
i'm confident that when the next news portal/site template comes along from RT it will be like what sporticus was to IG - just waiting is a pain
