I've already installed 1.5.3 and uploaded an RT template, but decided I'd prefer to start with the demo content as a baseline. I've seen the tutorial on rocket launcher (suggesting local extract and upload all files via ftp), but wondering if I can just upload the zip file to my root directory (via control panel/file manager) and extract (overwrite) files there, and then run the RocketLauncher installation. Will this work?

No.
More trouble that it's worth.
The best thing to do is leave your install where it is. Install the rocket launcher into a subdomain, or local, or another directory, and just use it as a guide.
You want to build everything on your site so you know what it is and how it got there. It will be better in the long run. If there's a problem with something, you'll know right where to go because you built it. Using the RL as a guide, it won't take long at all.

Thanks Mack... while I was waiting for a reply I kept playing around with my original install and I'm tempted to agree with you... too much ground to cover. But a veritable hats-off to the RT crew that developed the template. Good stuff.
