mod_categories... does it exist?

I am desperately seeking a way to display a list of categories contained in a section in the same way as the split-menu system in the recent OMT template works. Only I want to be able to place the resultant list in the position of my choice.
Does the hive mind have an answer? Is there a third-party angel out there?

for the moment yes and as long as the modules/components from mambo are fairly recent.
