Just between you and me.... and away from the Joomla forums....
Is 1.5 still too buggy?
I'm still very new to the Joomla scene, I've played with J1, and much preferred J1.5, and decided to build my site with it, using Rocket of course, but for the third time in the last couple of months, I've been locked out of the backend (and frontend). Twice with the first couple of free templates I played with, and now with Hyperion that I've put a lot of work into. Some googling revealed its pretty common with 1.5.
Not happy.
And theres no way I want to launch a site with these sorts of problems.
Am I better off just sticking to the 'tired and tested', meaning J1?
Any trusted and unbiased advice would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Interesting question. I'm personally very tempted to stick with 1.0.X until every component I need is J1.5 native and all the bug chatter about J1.5 dies down.
I find 1.5 pretty solid except for a couple of areas. The first and foremost is the caching. There are lots of little bugs that cause issues in the caching, ie RSS breaking with caching on, custom modules breaking etc. I think these are going to be addressed in 1.5.6 and once that's done, I don't think there are really any deal breakers stopping a successful 1.5 site. The extensions are another matter, so if you rely on something that is not ported to 1.5, you better stick with 1.0. For me personally 1.5 is way better to develop and deploy, and I'm going to be using it on any new joomla site I put together, no question.
Sobi2 is a core function/purpose for my site, which means legacy must be on, and from what I can tell, no-one knows if its going native anytime soon, and I don't know of any other alternative with the functionality.
Still seems like a difficult call for new sites at this time, 1 is stable and extension rich but now being superseded, so support will eventually fall away, 1.5 can have these bugs, still poor extension support, but WILL continue to be supported into the future.
No doubt, 1.5 is far more advanced, I try 1, but I just can't bring myself to use it, as fine as it may have been, its days are over, but like I said I've been locked out 3 times already, fixed the first 2, still haven't gotten back into the last.
And I only bring up this topic because I'm just a mere mortal when it comes to these things, and when they need fixing, its a big ask! I, like most, probably need something solid and dependable.
Andy's post did give me hope.
I did a new instal of Hyperion 1.5, and decided to make upgrades a PRIORITY as soon as they are released. I highly recommend this post to anyone who needs to upgrade in MAMP...

Its dead simple!
I would like to develop my next site with 1.5.5, but a major extension that I need to use - AEC - only runs in legacy mode which I understand might slow the site down somewhat. That said I do have a dedicated server running 64 bit CentOS and plenty of resources so I don't know.
As an aside, is there any other subscription management package with auto account expiry that runs under 1.5 native? RokClub doen't do account expiry, otherwise it would have been perfect.
I think these are going to be addressed in 1.5.6 and once that's done, I don't think there are really any deal breakers stopping a successful 1.5 site.
