    • it's on the joomla club board. it's related to some 3rd party application or plugin you've installed that has modified your browsers useragent string to include a reference to IE6 even though your running IE7. This confuses our code that checks the browser version, and then in turn you get IE6 css loaded when you shouldn't.

    • Great news for your theme then, WTG!

(I thought the source code looked rather sparse when I opened it in ultra.)
Thank you for the update, if you like I can test it again on the browsers that aren't working for it.

I just checked this on a brand new Vista64 laptop with IE7 and I did not experience the same problem. Please clear your temporary internet files and see if it's okay afterwards. If not, try reinstalling IE7. Let me know how that works out.

      Regards,
      Jim

If the above quote is directed at me...all I can say is my jaw totally hit the floor when I read that, with all due reguards of course.

Of course that was directed at you. I'm sorry if you didn't understand what "reinstall" meant. It does not mean "remove" or "uninstall" because, as you pointed out, it's not that simple. There are however, at least 2 ways to accomplish a "reinstall" on a Vista machine.

The first is to reset IE.
Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced Tab > Click the 'Reset' button.

The second is running a system file check. Open a command prompt as Administrator, and run "sfc /scannow". This will verify and if necessary repair all critical system files, including those of IE.

Now clearly, if it works fine on a brand new machine then your problem is caused by a third party install or corrupted/missing files. So next time, instead of getting all high and mighty, ask for clarification. We will provide it for you.

    • Hmmm, I have the problem with winxp, now IE7 has the nice mode to run without addons, and using that, the style still breaks up. Using fiddler I found that my user agent string was indeed modified as Andy states. But I still cannot find what is causing the problem  Going to dig into the registry and see if I can find a solution there. If somebody has a quick fix, please let me know.

Ok, solved the problem, just resetting the browser did the trick :cheesy:

    • Found an easier solution under windows: look for this registry entry: "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1)". It causes templates to break, because IE7 is using wrong user agent string. Simply removing it does the trick.

      THINK BEFORE YOU POST

I sorta figured that the typical forum moderator would get bent out of shape for being corrected by a user in their own forum.

This is why I stated things like:
"with all due reguards of course."
      "let me if I may"
"and I'm trying to be as PC as possible here" *PC means politically correct*
and "I wish you the best in your quest for resolution to this problem."

But, honestly I am shocked that a moderator at a pay-for-forum would insult a customer in this fashion. I wrote the things I wrote above about your incorrect or mistated guidance so that other users who have less then 20yrs computing experience who came behind us 5 months from now would NOT follow your instructions and waste their time or destroy their Vista build in the process, NOT to defame you in anyway and then have you insult me.

Hopefully, in the future you will say what you mean, and mean what you say when you are a moderator in a HELP forum. The user SHOULD NOT have to ask for clarification of a KEY word in a statement because it was mistated by the one who is HELPING. Reinstall of IE was typical and common in all Microsoft OS's prior to Vista. Rest IE is the only option in Vista, and you made that error, not me. If I told you to reinstall photoshop, does that mean you need to reset it? I totally think not.

NO, "Now clearly, if it works fine on a brand new machine then.. ", don't ever assume that to be true, especially on a lappy, unless you personally wiped it's hard drive and installed the OS after market; which is information about your lappy that is not available to me.

As another user in the Andy Miller linked thread above - states the absolute truth when she writes something to the effect of, "what am I supposed to do? Put a dunning message on my website that states if you can't view this website properly reset your IE7 and re-install all your browser plug-ins?"..and if that doesn't work, re-install your OS?

This is why I suspect Andy Miller writes: I knew I had seen this problem before!!!....We're looking into it now. And where the PROPER solution firmly lies.

If you've ever run a sfc scan on a professional graphics workstation like many webmasters utilize, you'd know it would take about 8+ hours to run that scan with a TB of storage in array or more. Time professionals don't have. You'd also know that reseting IE7, depending on your computing skills and why you are resetting IE7 in the first place, along with file replacing sfc/ + can corrupt the entire Vista OS.

Do you really think that either of the above solutions you recommended are something that folks would want to risk to achieve the pleasure of viewing ONE simple website? The majority of the browsing internet community would think not.

I do wish you the best and hope that you grow and learn from this experience. If all my words are seen by you as being high and mighty perhaps as a forum moderator you need to learn how to read other peoples printed words without using your own brain's 3rd person voice for that was never my intent.

    • Alright folks i think there's been some misunderstandings on both sides, i'm sure no one was having a go at the other intentionally. Let's chalk this up to a misunderstanding of 'tone' and 'emotion' and move along. :)

We are looking into this problem, we've replicated it, and now we're just trying to get it to work on the phpBB3 side in a similar fashion the fix we found on the Joomla side. This of course is a work around to fix poor user-agent handling that in turn was instituted to fix bugs in a poor browser. That's the joy of working with Microsoft products...
