One of the things I try to convey to people on forums like this is that when it comes to Web Development (or IT of any kind for that matter) there are no shortcuts - and you really can't afford to look for them, especially when it comes to online commerce. Identity Theft is BIG business - and quite lucritive online - predominantly because people on both sides of the stick (merchants and consumers) fail to simply "look before they leap" (or read before they click).
In situations like yours, I tend to come down heavy because the answer I give MATTERS on so many levels. Did you know, for instance, that financial institutions around the world have started taking legal action against online merchants who fail to secure their customers' data appropriately?
Yes, you need to get your feet wet in order to learn how to swim - but learning how to swim by attempting the oceanic leg of a triathlon in shark-infested waters would be sheer idiocy in anyone's books. Whenever I see something like that, I tend to shout and wave my arms a bit.
Paddle around in a wading pool and learn to swim before you take on that triathlon.

Thanks! I appreciate the great post and I understand why you got to be stern about all this. I will be careful with what I do. Identity theft and online scams are big issues I am worried about and I will study them more extensively.

- Things can go wrong but it's really not that difficult to sell things online. Virtuemart is a good place to start. Especially for Joomla. I began with a Virtuemart site, followed directions, searched forums for answers along the way. My first site i made everything .01 and used my own Paypal account to test. When everything worked as it should, change the prices and promote it. A half dozen stores later, there aren't any features you coudn't accomplish with Virtuemart. Order tracking, inventory, coupons, sales, international shipping, so many features compared to an email invoice from Paypal and not that difficult.
