At one of our Joomla 1.5 sites, we have a lot of pictures of churches and monograms stored in a JoomGallery. This is for the users to download and use in the printing of material for their weddings.
Fortunately, we have extreme amounts of images and monograms (8-10.000) and we reaching a point where it's not the optimal solution to just have them "floating around" in a gallery. Especially because the users wants to search for it - not browse around.
Yes, we could put them in folders for "Churches starting with A", "Churches starting with B", but still, we can easily have 500 of these in ONE category.
I've begun thinking, if there's a better solution. Like a more database-like solution.
Take a look at Fabrik (
www.fabrikar.com
), as it would allow you to create cascading dropdown/filters to organize all of these pictures and categories and display the filtered results in a nicely styled tabular view.
So, for example, you have a dropdown for Churches and monograms, the user selects 'churches,' another dropdown appears with the options associated with churches (e.g., churches that begin with a, St. Mary's, St. Jude's, etc), another dropdown could appear to furture filter the aggregate, etc, etc...
Now the tricky part would be getting the 10,000 pictures in and and all the associations set...I could get this going starting with zero, but to migrate 10,000 over would require a stud like Hugh or Rob in the Fabrik forums....
Perhaps cut and paste your question over there in the forums and see what Rob or Hugh suggest. But Fabrik could handle this, if you are unable to find something else...perhaps a compound tagging system or something...not quite sure of any other ways, sorry.
