Registration, contact form won't redirect properly

I'm at my wits end trying to fix this. On my 1.5.9 site, if you create a new account and click "submit," the page just refreshes to the home page with no "welcome" or thank you or anything. You have no idea if your registration worked. In fact, if you use incorrect information like a duplicate email address, you don't get an error, but the page refreshes to a blank registration page (instead of the home page) with no explanation. I have a similar problem with the contact form. When you hit send, it just refreshes to a blank contact form with no message at all so you don't know if it was sent. I also had trouble with the captcha program I installed. If you type the wrong code, you never get an error message, it just refreshes to the blank form. I disabled it for now, but I wonder if there is something wrong with the overall "redirect" function on the site. I'm not a programmer, so I really don't know how the php works.
I have re-uploaded all of the joomla files to see if something was corrupted, but it still isn't working. Please, someone tell me how to fix this. I don't think it's related to the template, but is it? I'm using Dimensions light.

- After further experimentation, it does seem to be a template issue. I changed the template for my site to two others and when I created an account I got the "you may now log in" message. I will post again in the dimensions forum. I wonder if it is the "light" template that is causing problems?
