Does Google 'read' pdfs while indexing?

...dumb question, perhaps, but i was just wondering if Mr. G's spiders actually go through pdfs that are posted on a website, or just the URL pointing to the pdf itself; more specifically, if we add some links to our pdfs, would they be picked up by Google?

If you want to see a funny example of a search in google, just take a title of a book or something similar and add "pdf" to the search, with the quotes. Google will deliver you the results of all pdf files containing that text.
