Joomla Sites Timeout

I have some Joomla & HTML sites hosted on the same server....
1. The HTML sites load fine, you can seem the images/text load when you get to the site.
2. The Joomla sites often timeout before you see anything and I get a 'page not found' error, when the sites do come up, its almost instant as if it was pre-loading the page and wouldnt let you see it before it was done.
...I believe this is some sort of loading/cache issue, is there a way to have the page load as in scenario 1.

- Seems to work ok now. I can't really see anything obvious that can cause these issues except maybe something related to the server, database or routing. Maybe you can talk to your host?

thanks for taking a look, I will do that...
Its really not the page loading, just getting the page to come up somtimes is slow and times out..... are there any general Joomla/PHP tweaks I can use to speed that part up?
