Tip: Mask your URL when posting a question about your site i

    • Hey all,

When I run into difficulty when designing a website for a client often I will turn to the forum of my community, in this case RocketTheme or Joomla.org. Of course, when posting on these forums you must include the URL of the website for others to check it out. This could become an issue for you down the road....

Let's say your website name is www.mywebsite.com . After your launch, when users Google www.mywebsite.com Google may return your posts on the forums and display them as a search result. In fact, they may initially be higher than your website due to PageRank. The last think a client or the clients readership wants to find is an archive the challenges and errors you made while bumbling through the development of their site.

Not sure if this has been covered in other areas but I do think it's very important so I posted.

      Cheers

      hi,

      you can use this:
      tinyurl.com/

You get a shorter URL with:

      pym.se/
      www.pho.se/

      :D :P

    • Another way to do, as I've seen before, is to change the address from www.mywebsite.com to www*mywebsite*com.

However this is not 'moderator friendly'!

Consider the amount of sites an average moderator looks at any given day and imagine the tedium of Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V from the post to the address bar, along with replacing '*' with '.' for every site you try to help out with.

IMO, the best solution, don't develop a site for a client on the actual domain where it'll reside when complete.

Use a test domain for all your sites in development.

If you have questions you can post a link to the development domain.

Bigger developers may have their own hosting and can create a domain just for this.

But even if you're a 'little guy', for less than $100 a year you can get a reliable shared hosting plan just for testing.

You can even run several sites at once from subfolders and use it as a preview for your clients.
