    Forums source of spam?

Posted 18 years 5 months ago
    • Hi All

Interested in opinions on where the dreaded spammers get details of sites to target?

I was about to post the URL of a site I did over the weekend using Elixer 2.0* and held off. My last site I posted here and on a few other Joomla sites in forums seeking help on various bits & pieces.

Soon afterwards, we stared getting spammed big time. I had to close the public guest book because of all the XXX and unsolicited materials (on a kid related site :-( ). Now, the contact form and even the site registration form are being used and I'd get 5-10 admin mails daily from the site that could be categorised as spam.

Does posting urls on sites such as rockettheme and other Joomla sites increase the chances of getting on the spammers lists? Do they trawl here for new sites? Any thoughts on any ways to combat this pain in the you know where?

      Peter

*Many many thanks to Andy and RocketTheme for a great service. I was approached by a (new) client last Friday to put together a site and gave them a price and expected dev. timeframe (by end of month due to workload). They came back, like the price but needed the site in place (domains, hosting & site) for today as it had to tie in with a newspaper and radio campaign. Offered to double the fee! There goes my weekend, I thought, but worth it ;-)

Anyway, Joomla and Elixer 2.0 were perfect. With very little template tweaking, I got the site up and running with contnet etc. ready for review in about a day. The biggest part of the job was scanning the client-supplied graphics and property plans! My subscription here has paid off in spades on this job alone. About time to upgrade to pro sub I think!

    • Hi Peter, I also wonder about it...

Meantime, you could use the new version of Securityimages to protect from spam: login, admin login, contact, registration and lost password.

    • I know the member sites forum is probably a good sales aid for Andy but has it ever been considered that it could be restricted to members only? That would give me more confidence posting there (and in the site of the month thread when I get to be that good!)

    • Laugh, I can't win! I used to have all these forums restricted to members only even to read, but got a lot of comments from folks who wanted to have access to them even after their membership expired. Well, that's very hard to implement so as a compromise I opened up the more general sections to public viewing while keeping the template specific forums for members only. These forums are not used for a sales aide or anything of the sort, they are for you guys and I do my best to make them as friendly and as helpful as possible.

    • Actually, Andy, they work well as a sales tool. It's good to see the level of activity, support response time etc. before making the comittment.

I understand your position though. And you're right, you can never win, it's impossible!

That is the best bet. (good advice as usual RT Hero Yves!)

Good luck to you on the war on spammers and a pox on all spammers.

      Cheers!
