My next Joomla! installation will be website for my family and friends. My dad and I take motorcycle trips every year so the site is a place to share those experiences and pictures. My fiance is very close with her family and her sister's children. The site would be a place to share photos and family experiences.
The things that I have identified thus far that we would use would be:
- some type of image gallery. It needs to be a really good, stable, easy to implement and use gallery because this will be a main focus of the site.
- We might add a forum and for this I would probably use a basic forum such a Joomlaboard.
- A calendar
I'd like to hear some of your feedback on what you have learned on your family and friends sites. What components, modules and mambots you found to work well. And please, suggest things that I haven't mentioned that you learned worked well for you.
I'm thinking that Elixir or Subtletrooper would be a good place to start.

this is timely, my sister in-law has asked for a similar site as a chistmas gift. One of the first things we talked about were the abilities of family memebrs to use websites. several of them are expert users, most however are internet-phobic.
They are considering a gallery but like the idea more of this plugin http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,1468/Itemid,35/ Ive been researching the galleries a lot and find they either have way over the top functionality, or are too simple so a middle of the road gallery I like is easy gallery http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,1109/Itemid,35/
They would also like a calendar, ideally they want something that can import outlook calendar entries, but this just doesnt seem to be straightforward available in any calendar i have seen. So what we are considering is thyme http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,753/Itemid,35/ it is a major set up, and a commercial liscence but fits closer to thier needs - the other claendar that is in beta (alpha really) is http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,1401/Itemid,35/ jcal pro - pro doesnt mean it costs this calendar has promise inmho although currently has a few bugs which are being worked on ie no pasting of descriptions.
i havent started looking into forums so ill watch this thread and discussion

Regarding the gallery, do you intend upon having users (family and friends) to be able to upload their own pics?
If not, I'd suggest that you consider SlimBox.

Roland, I forgot to specify that earlier but I do intend to let family and friends upload and share pictures. The ones I have in mind are experienced enough that it wouldn't be hard for them to learn. Besides, I won't have time to do this for everyone. Everyone else would be happy enough to just go to the site see what they can see.
A calendar would help with events, birthdays, holidays, etc.
A forum might help plan gatherings and just small-talk.
Any other components/modules that might be advantageous to a site like this?
