My Panic Attack (Web Transfer)

    • Scenario:
Transferring website from site1 to site2.

      What I've Done:
Backed up everything from site1 (Zipped entire directory in Filezilla)
      Deleted Site1 completely.
Installed Joomla 1.5 on Site2. (Installed Sample Data, maybe I shouldn't have?)
Unzipped everything from site1 to Site2.

First Error was MySQL DB ERror, it was solved easy by adjusting the config php script to include updated information.

Now that I've cleared that, I can now finally see my website, however it still has sample data loaded. I've logged in through the back end, I do not see any of the articles or menu's I used to have. The CSS/HTML files look generic and not the ones I've uploaded.

I'm going to keep checking everything on the website file for file and hope something works because I really don't want to go back and do this thing all over again. I'd appreciate any tips if anyone has any regarding transferring websites.

      Thank You,

      - Devon

    • Oh wow, and one more thing, and please don't tell me I shot myself in the foot with this one...

I didn't back up the DB because it only had 2 user accounts. Please don't tell me any info other then those accounts were deleted. XD

    • Use JoomlaPack to back up your site from site 1 to site 2.

    • Retired, but build and run websites for organisations of school leaders and others - e.g. http://www.icponline.org, http://www.aspa.asn.au, http://www.appa.asn.au

    • Backing up all the website files using Filezilla will not include the database, as it is stored on your server outside the Joomla installation (usually). That is probably why the sample data is still visible in site 2 - it is the only content in the database. I notice that you have deleted Site 1 completely - by that I guess that you mean that you deleted the Joomla folder. It sounds to me like you have little chance to recover any of site 1. JEM is right - to back up a Joomla site in future, use JoomlaPack - it backs up both the Joomla folder and files plus the database. It's very easy to use - it worked for me the first time that I used it!! :cheesy: The procedure to then install it on the new site is really easy as well.

I really hesitate to suggest that you either find someone who can access your database from site 1 or re-install Joomla on site 1 and point it to the original database and see what happens. I have no idea if that would work. Someone might be able to give you some better advice.

    • Replicate a site is a quite easy process, all that you need to do is access over cpanel at the site A, zip the files, download them, later go to myphpadmin, export it as zip file, so there come the next step, go to the site b uplaod the zip files and extract it after to it create the database upload the zip database, back to files manager open the configuration.php and refresh it with the new values, at the end this process is more safe and free, no need to use a 3rd application that sometimes could dont work 100%. For me it always work and take me no more of 5 minutes after to zip all the files and database from the site A.

    • Hey Bruce,

I appreciate the input. I didn't bother to backup the SQL DB because I was under the impression it just held user info (name,emails,addresses,md5 hashes, etc...)

So yeah... I'm sad now. :( So much work and I make a retarded move. I'm going to call the host and see if its possible at all to still recover that SQL DB.

    • Just to be sure I understand correctly, JoomlaPack and Akeeba Backup are the same thing, correct? Or actually, Akeeba replaces JoomlaPack, right?

Correct, the software is exactly the same (of course with regular improvements) only the name has changed.
