    • Hi,

I'm currently building a news+directory type of site. The majority of visitors will be coming from a slow dialup connection (and most likely) with low-end computer.
Can anyone please point me to a light and fast loading template for such a site?

      Thanks!

    • I'll second Pixel Perfect. It has almost no graphics, and will load quickly.

Bento Box has a few more graphics, but they could be removed, and the table free design might help on a dialup.

Get the Firefox Web Developer Toolbar if you don't have it already. Also grab Firebug. (sorry, don't have the links handy)

With those two plugins, you can easily see what a template would look like without graphics, and you can see what is taking the longest to load, which will help optimization.

If you have not already, make sure to experiment with turning Gzip encoding on in the Joomla! configuration. It might speed things up a bit more.

Finally, all of the RT templates are laid out for modularity, and easy update. This is a very good thing in general, but if you are looking to squeeze the last few ounces of performance out of your site, try the following:

Once you have your site looking the way you want, you can combine your .css files into a single file, and optimize that file. There are several css programs to help with doing this. It is a little tedious, but you might also want to remove all the CSS that you are not actually using, as that will speed things up further.

You can shave a little extra off the index.php file as well. Specifically, there is a lot of white space in the actual html, which can simply be removed.

The final thing to look at is your JavaScript. There are many JavaScript optimizers out there which will shave a lot of space off of your scripts. You might also be able to combine some of your scripts together to form a single file (depending on your JS skills).

As a last thought, I do it like this:

      1. Develop until you like it.
      2. Create a backup copy of the final template.
      3. Optimize.

      Hope this helps.

    • PP certainly - or maybe Vivid Design (as an unobvious contender) - it's very very small (even smaller if you strip out the header - around 10Kb total).
