    Comparing two files for variations

Posted 14 years 8 months ago
    • Hi all,

I have some customized templates and am getting ready to do template updates. Since I don't want to overwrite my customizations, I need to find the specific changes that were made in the update.

I know that changelog points to which files were affected. I'm looking for a way to compare my file vs. the updated file to see the differences without me manually reading thru the two files line by line.

      Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm on a Mac and the software I'm finding to automate the process is all for windows only. :-(

      thanks for your suggestions!

    • Thanks for the suggestions.
I think my original efforts in searching around were lacking.

I'm liking one I found from Martins link. DiffMerge
Free & Easy. It's doing what I want!
(that alternativeTo site is pretty nice as well!!!)

and Henning, thanks for the link to James S! blog entry about the updating process.
I wish I had discovered that long ago. I've asked that question before but no one ever pointed me there, so I've just sort of figured out that on my own.

If there is one thing I struggle with on RT, it's finding good information like that. I would love to see RT have a search that can search just the forums (i think that's how it is now) or search the rest of the site w/out forums or search all. That would be really useful. :)

    • I've been working for a while on compiling some of the more helpful links and getting them into a searchable format. Here's what we've launched that you can try that you might not have seen yet.

When you're on the forum, look at the orange sub-menu and find the "Quick Links". That is set to popup in Rokbox so you can check it at any time from any page on the forum. Even if you're typing a post, you can click it and rokbox will popup and you don't lose your work. Then all links inside are set to open in a new window or tab, so you post still doesn't get reset.

I'm attaching a screenshot. Give the search a try too, and I just added the links from this post for the merge systems.

    • That is good to know!
That search could be very helpful.

      Thanks Ben!!!

    • Ben, I understand it's a work in progress, so not meaning to be critical. Just some feedback. :cheesy: The Blog post by James S about how to update a template that has been customized is a great resource for newbies.

I would have never looked at the blog for that though. I tried a bunch of searches where you just showed me and it never lead me to that blog post. Great info, but too random to find. Makes me wonder if there is other valuable info lurking around RT that I just haven't discovered.

Did I just hijack my own thread????

    • Thanks for the feedback. Still trying to find the best way to categorize things so they display well and turn up in search easily. There are a lot of links out there on the RT site with a great deal of information, so definitely click around on the blog. I'll keep working on moving things around and plugging in more links and see where it takes us.
