    Facebook API for "Fan Pages?"

Posted 14 years 5 months ago
    • Okay, I must confess...not a real Facebook fan and a total rookie using it. ;)

I created a 'fan page' for a new site I am working on, and I am trying to wire up JomSocial's Facebook connect, jreviews, etc, etc, and all need a Facebook API and secret code/thing, of course.

HOWEVER, each time I go to the facebook developers site and try to create a new app, which is supposed to give me the API, it says I need to create a personal facebook profile to do so...yet it always tells me I can't create a personal profile for a business/website/fan page, etc.

So, um, excuse by rookieness, but how do go about creating a fan page AND getting a respective API for that page? I thought perhaps I get the API through my personal facebook account, then can someone tie it to the fan page, but I don't think that's how it works.

      Any ideas?

    • After trying and trying, I must conclude that you can't get an API for a fan page.

Each time I visit facebook.com/developers to 'add new application' while signed in using the fan page account for the new site, I get:

To use this feature, you will need to sign up for a personal Facebook profile.

    • I can explain more in this.

Why they have based in this way. It's to link a person, since a fanpage isnt a person.
So ALL applications and all those extra features you will need a personal facebook account but you can link your applications into your fanpage. Also other features such as Facebook ads also require personal facebook account.

      Hope this helps.

Thanks, Jonathan. Yes, I had to go this route, but I had hoped to keep the 'app' away from my personal stuff, as this is for someone else...though it's okay to use my API for 'like' apps and the like, when it comes time to setup a 'Facebook connect' feature, I didn't want to link in the connect box associated with me...but all roads lead to Rome, as they say, and you must tie apps to a person like you taught me.

Many thanks for the reply, sir.

    • @Terp: You need to create an application to use the Open Graph Protocoll and the API functions: www.facebook.com/developers/ (the button in the upper right corner).

    • Terp...you're getting confused man....none of the fb Connect stuff will be linked to your personal account.

You don't need to tie in an App to you as a person unless you're going to use it. IE log onto the website.

fB just requires you to have a personal account with them before using the services, just like you need a RT account to post here.

When you're done developing, you can add other admins to the app as well.

      Make more sense?

      Cheers,

      Rich

Edit: Also you don't really need to tie the app to the fanpage itself, fbconnect functions and your fan page work separately. When you set up the app, your making calls to the website, not to the fanpage.
