Tips for creating an online community?

Posted 14 years 3 months ago
    • I'm not asking for a detailed marketing strategy, just some simple tips for creating an community that have worked for you(?).

I am able to reach about 5,000 people on Facebook in one way or another, but getting more than a handful of them to join has been very difficult. People do not want to leave something they know and are comfortable with (FB), for something new.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated, I'm sure by more members than just me.

    • What type of community are you trying to form?

Is it a forum, a social network, a 'chat room' (do people still do that?)?

Also, what is your niche or interest for people to come to you over others?

Good questions. A decent explanation of the community's purpose would probably get things much further along.

The site is about Romanian culture with mostly positive/fun articles; it uses JomSocial along with a forum for discussing more serious topics,.. that is its intention, anyway. I can get people talking about a subject on FB very easily, however, getting those people who participate in the topics over to the forum is next to impossible.

    • I have a forum, in design however so I cannot offer positive results, and for each article when it's read a link is built for talking about it in the forums. This could possilbley be an entry point into the social network.

Also, it may help to enage a group of people to start being social. Some may want experience from the ground up with a social network, some may just be interested in your niche, others you may have to bribe *or pay. But it would stand to reason that people would not want (and why would they) to join a stagnant group. So, I'd assume you need to some how stimulate activity.

Have you considered giving something away, possilby a trip or electronic device?

      Just some ideas....

I'm interested in this too as I'd like to foster a 'community like' environment on a new site of mine that I'm testing now. I primarialy want forums and a healthy commenting system while ofering ability to schedule calendar events.
