I'm wanting to develop a dating site using one of the big 3 open-source platforms (drupal 7, Joomla 1.5 or 1.6, or Wordpress). We're most experienced with Joomla but are reasonably comfortable with Drupal and Wordpress.
I'd hoped there was an add-on to JomSocial that might handle this but there's not. For Joomla, the only viable solution I've found is Love Factory ( www.thefactory.ro/shop/joomla-1.6-extens...-factory-dating.html ). There's a Wordpress plugin - www.wordpressdating.com - but it appears abandoned by the developers or poorly supported. For Drupal, I've found nothing. So I ask, is Love Factory the only boxed option? Any suggestions? Has anyone created a dating site. I'm hoping to create a lavalife level site pretty quickly. I'd appreciate anyone who might have experience to share. Thanks.

Depends how you design the site, cant see why you wouldn't be able to use Jomsocial for a dating site, has all the features you'd need, just looked and there is even a mod called mod_datingsearch included.
The multiple profile types etc should give you plenty of options, I'd say Jomsocial would be perfect, unless you have something different in mind? Will be a site where people meet each other yes?
Jomsocial also lets you search profile types, so say you're a man looking for a women, but you're looking for someone in a certain age range and other characteristics, members can use advanced search to find people based on age, gender, amount of toes etc, the only limitation is what profile types you include.

Oh wow. Didn't come across this JomSocial add-on before. Gonna test drive it. Just need to make sure it does the basic "man looking for woman" or "woman looking for man" type thing.

- Perhaps its not mentioned anywhere but they all come as standard, all apps and modules are included, you just decide which to use.

Yes it does that too, you just create your profile types and ask new members to complete these during registration, so the gender will simply be a tick box male or female. And so anyone looking for man would goto advanced search and select to search for gender type and select male, click search and it brings up a list of all male members.
Then as I said earlier you add other fields, so age, location, amount of toes etc, etc so when using advanced search you can search for males, aged 31 living in a specific location and four toes so members can drill down to an ideal preference.
Of course there are hundreds of characteristics you could add, but I'd advise not to make it too complicated people may get frustrated during registration, they could do some during registration and others at a later date - what profile fields are required during reg and what aren't can be set up in Jomsocial back end too.
Is quite simple once you've done it a couple of times,
