SOLVED - Can't find explanation of Archived Articles.

Posted 13 years 5 months ago
    • I'm trying to figure out what the Archived Articles is all about. I thought it was putting some old articles in a storage folder and then if I need them I can access them to publish again. But I realized a week later that those old "archived" articles were still displaying online. So I set them all to unpublish so they won't show up in any menus/categories/urls on my site.

When I searched the Joomla.com forum for "archive articles" the best result I found was this lame explanation in the Wiki help:
      docs.joomla.org/Moving_an_Article_to_the_archive

I don't want to criticize the person/people who wrote the Joomla Wiki since they donate their time for free, but that page tells me nothing and gives no useful explanation of what "archive" means for articles in Joomla.

Does anyone have a link to a better explanation?

What is the difference between Archiving and Trashing an Article?
11 August 2008 Last Updated on 11 August 2008 administrator

When you Archive an Article, the content is put into a state which removes it from your site as published content. The Article is still available from within the Control Panel and can be retrieved for editing or republishing purposes. Trashed Articles are just one step from being permanently deleted but are still available until you Remove them from the Trash Manager. You should use Archive if you consider an Article important, but not current. Trash should be used when you want to delete the content entirely from your site and from future search results.

That's the part I don't understand because I thought that Archiving an article would remove it from my site as published content (like unpublish does). However, those archived articles were still available online. So I switched them from "archived" to "unpublished".

The Wiki help article has one sentence about archiving articles and it states they remain published.
This is useful if you publish a lot of articles and there are ones that you still want to be published on the site, but have been displaced in priority by new ones.

So what's the purpose of the "archive" status in the ACP if the articles remain published?
