So my visions are becoming narrowed in on something that supports my sites needs. It seems that things are changing and the days ofWhy would you want to use InnoDB?
are long gone. Now it seems that many sites, components, templates and more are seeking to be filled with the requirement for InnoDB support.
Perhaps it shouldn't be such a challenging task... but so it seems and with most changes in life and technology when wanting to do something not just securely but right and future proofed... it is indeed a task and certainly is challenging. I see more and more people wondering where to find hosts that support InnoDB, people whom have found such hosts then only to realize that certain elements aren't in place (still, ie; PDO drivers?) for certain increasingly popular extensions and templates, PHP versions long since passed and oh my does the list ever end?
So my reasoning for this post is this... and maybe this is a broad and daunting request... but, I am in search of such a host that will provide me with a solid peace of mind and can satisfy the demands of an ever changing market.
I will say that the host I am with is excellent in the terms of their support staff and the control panel has been great... oh and there is also the easy use of simple scripts to install current Platforms (Joomla!, Drupal, phpBB and Wordpress). They however are falling behind on the flow of things that land outside the general.... hmmm, how to say this... Blog Box. PHP version is slipping behind, no InnoDB (which is turning into more of a MUST everyday it appears), lack of user site focused upgrade potential and generally seems to be a dead end with all things changing the way they are.
Here I am in my most humble form to ask all you web developing, site coding, host hunting, problem solving gurus if anyone can help me hunt down the host of my dreams.
I will add that I have done numerous hours of research (numerous = I stopped adding etch marks on the host prison cell walls after about 7 straight hours... it got depressing... OK?) looking into and contacting different web hosts to find my shiny new resolve. I found that they are all willing to tell you exactly what you want to hear to squeeze that nickle out of your pocket. You then discover they had split tongues and scales thick withOh, you meant support for that? Here's some of your money back
.
An internet filled with boundless golden sites and gateways promising you the freedom you deserve... and if you can not find the information that your heart and brain desires... it's ok, look at their shiny and ever so impressive website; like the messiah of the hosting world, if they don't have it then a miraculous event will occur that just makes it SO! Unfortunately, that doesn't really do it for me. Sorry, I got caught in dreamspace just thinking about it.
I have been browsing many hosting opportunities that support Magento as I am under the impression that you can run Magento on MYISAM, but that is not really recommended.. nor does it always work. I am not running a Magento site.. I just know they meet a lot of the requirements I am after. Anyhow, before this turns into my first official High Quality RT Novel I will begin the very thing I came here to ask... which you have more than likely already figured out. But Wait, there's MORE!
Just like components, plugins, modules and templates... I too have them.
My requirements
- Support, support, support annnnd.. ahh yes... here it is. Support. Looking for a solid support base with fluid and consistent response times.
- Easy domain transfer.. save the complications for the boring days (which there aren't any around here)
- Access to the php.ini file... be it through cgi panels or otherwise
- Friendly control panel on the host side. Some care, some don't. I do.
- Joomla! friendly. Nothing more to be said about that.
- Easy script additions such as a simple script service
- SSL friendly. I am or will be running a store and this is obviously important
- Price is in the range of hosting at no more than $200/yr
- Load balanced servers. Aren't downtimes a drag... especially when it's not your fault?
- email@mysite... I guess that's a given.. although I have encountered some that oddly enough say they have such things, only to find I have to pay an additional fee.... per box!
- Bandwidth. Enough to carry around 2000 unique steps per month
- Disk Space doesn't have to be more than 10-15GB... is it ever truly unlimited?
- Not oversold on space. Not sure if this really matters. I have heard both sides of that debate.
