Virtumart Alternatives and why?

  • Virtumart Alternatives and why?

    • I have been looking at Virtumart and see many are unsatisfied with 2.x. How do the folks here feel about it? as a result I have been looking for an alternative and do like Ecwid, but it seems to lack some features. All this said, should I just go with Virtumart or does anyone have an alternative favorite they would recommend and why?

    • It all depends what you want to do, I know you want to sell stuff but what products, how many different SKU, any downloadable for sale products, what kind of growth do you project, what is your budget are you going to allocate a fee for development and etc.

VirtueMart isn't too bad if you know what you want to do, for example if you are looking into downloadable for sale products VirtueMart is really good it has few drawbacks but overall is good, I am managing a site with over 2500 downloadable goods averaging about 20MB per file.

If you are looking into few tangible products let’s say over 100 VirtueMat is still good, I know sites that have 1000s of products but then they have development budget and etc.

If stand alone shopping cart will do, then you have lots of options, Magento is good and RT has magento club too but every time I have tried to install it I had issues and upgrade/update never has been smooth.

Then there is CS-Cart and PrestaShop both are feature rich and very user friendly, easy to install and manage.

By the way I know VirtueMart 2.x has had some issues which is understandable because it is completely new code rewritten from scratch, this is why I am working on making VirtueMart 1.1.9 compatible with Joomla 2.5.2, if interested see my signature.

    • I've sold 3 clients on Ecwid at this point and I love it. Especially since I can integrate it with RT's stuff.
    • Thank you,

    • I've installed Ecwid on one site & I really like it too. It is very fast & easy to set up & configure.

It does lack some features like a Featured Product module or a Specials (sale items) module. I beleive you could create your own by creating a custom html module & installing the widget code for items on sale but that is not as easy as publishing a ready built module for them. I am hoping they will add features in the near future.

I really like the Facebook app to enable Ecwid in a Facebook page & have the complete store load in a Facebook tab & be able to sell items on Facebook too. You can see Ecwid in action below. I only use one category for race registration so it is set to display all products in one category.

http://www.texasprokartchallenge. com (remove space & click on the Registration link (I use it here for online event registration)

      on Facebook
www.facebook.com/texaspkc (click on Race Registration tab).

    • using redshop... while the learning curve is not too steep on back-end, it has a multitude of really awesome functionality and integration.

You HAVE to be good at css to work the "templates" for the categories and product pages so it will look appropriate for your website theme/template.

sometimes bugs arise but the support is second to none, i post and the next day i get a prompt response from their support team and their reply either solves the problem or it's no more than two correspondences away from being completely taken care of with full explanation as to what modifications were done and what was causing errors.

if i was more versed in css i KNOW i could surely customize everything.

Plus there is more and more integration as the component progresses in terms of layout modules, plugins, and extra extensions.

Can't praise it enough for being good for what i need it to do.

I sell medical scrubs btw so i have a lot of products with lots of parameters that need to be selected before purchase.
my website is still under development but i'm making good headway.

one problem i do see being an issue is SEO with crawlers being able to pick up on the item description with keywords on the page. I'm currently working with them to devise a method to make it more SEO friendly, searchable, and search engine discoverable.

    • Thanks for the feedback guys. The one thing that seems obvious to me at this point is that there really are no carts that are totally on par with some of the dedicated products that are out there. However each has specific advantages and disadvantages. I do like the simplicity of ECWID. Virtumart while more complex, may be what I need.

To that end, this is what I need.
Creating a site that sells musical instruments. The number of individual items will be in the 500 to a thousand range. Since many order will orginate with a voice (Phone) Quote, users will need to be able to enter in either a quoted price or perhaps some form of quote ID. OR the store owner will need a way identify orders that they would adjust the price on. This would mean offline credit card processing in most instance. However Paypal will be integrated as well. Is there any product that would allow the user to enter notes on an order that would allow an owner to examine and modify the order prior to charging it?
