SOLVED Help!

    • Hi,

I've had a Joomla site running very nicely with everything working exactly as I'd like. However, I recently acquired the .com version of my site (I previously only had the .net version). I pointed the .com domain to my site folder, so now both .com and .net versions point to my site.

However, I think this has caused problems with Joomla access levels or something. I haven't changed anything with permission levels, but things are fishy now.

The main content appears and disappears as it should according to the permission level (or guest level) of the user, but the menu items do not. And even after I log out, it's like Joomla doesn't recognize that I've logged out, because my premium content is available still.

Furthermore, going to the .net and .com versions of the site at the same time show different menu configurations, thus leading me to believe they are conflicting.

I tried to just remove the .net version and only have .com point to the folder, but I'm wondering if there is a setting somewhere deeper in Joomla (a database perhaps) that has to know that I've switched domains?

Has anyone had this problem before? Is there some tests you'd suggest I can run to diagnose the problem? I'd be willing to PM someone some credentials if they'd be willing to scope out what might be wrong.

      I'd appreciate any help.

      Thanks,
      Jim

    • Hi Jim,

If you mean you have set both urls to just go to the index.php then you will have problems. The site was set to recognise .net so you should simply forward the .com to .net domain and let the forwarder do the work.

If I have misunderstood what you have done then you need to elaborate as to what you have actually done.

      Hope this helps 8)

    • Hi David,

The site was actually set up with the .net version. But I recently acquired the .com version and would rather use that instead.

So currently they both just point to the same site folder in my cpanel, which I felt was the problem.

What I'd like to do is make it so that Joomla talks with the .com version (as if I had set up joomla under the .com version) and then just have the.net forward to the .com.

What settings need to be changed in Joomla so that it uses the .com version instead of the .net version?

I'm happy to PM you credentials if that's be easier.

    • Hi there,

The configuration.php file is where the domain name will be. You will need to clear all Joomla cache and edit your cpanel account to be correct for the .com domain to take effect.

You will also need to edit the .net domain at your registrar to just forward to the .com

      Hope this helps 8)

    • Hi David,

I have set knowhuddle.net to forward to knowhuddle.com in my cpanel redirects

I've also assigned it so that knowhuddle.net doesn't point to my public_html/knowhuddle folder anymore. But knowhuddle.com does point to that folder.

I cleared the cache in Joomla, but noticed that the _system, com_modules, and com_plugins cache doesn't ever dissappear no matter how many times I delete the cache.

Lastly, I don't see anything specific in my php configuration file which specifies the .net or .com version of my site. There is a "sitename" field which just has KNOWHUDDLE.

I'm still having the same problems with Joomla noticing which level of content should be displayed after making these changes. Any suggestions?

    • Have you made sure that the .htaccess on the .net domain is set to point to the .com domain?

      I hope this helps.

    • Forwarding isn't the problem I'm having.

It's like Joomla is not properly recognizing the status of an individual person. I'm confident my ACL levels and user groups are configured properly. But when I log in (with premium access) the menu doesn't remove items which should only be shown for non-logged in users.

Also, when I've logged in with premium credentials, then log out, the "my account" menu item (which is only viewable by the premium group) still shows up as well as my premium content.

Truthfully, everything on the site seems to be functioning properly (even modules appearing and disappearing with login / logout status), but the main menu is where things are going wrong.

Why should I continue to see premium content after I've "logged out"? I don't think it's an ACL problem. I haven't touched those and everything went wrong when I added the .com version of the domain.

Is there any settings when Joomla is set up that require a specific "domain (e.g. my .net version) that might be messed up now that I'm using .com version?

    • okay folks this is solved.

I needed to set the global settings in system cache settings to: OFF and then everything worked perfectly
