SOLVED How to Move (Copy) a website

    • This is really a two part question. We have finished our developmental period on our new website (Redstone Arsenal Warrant Officers Association) at www.redstonewarrants.info .

      1. Now we want to point our original domain name (site), www.redstonewarrants.com to the new hosting location. I know how to accomplish that, with Go Daddy's help, change DNS entries etc. That parts not a problem. I just need to know if there are any pitfalls within Joomla that I have to watch out for? The Global Configuration>Site Settings>Site Name entry is already www.redstonewarrants.com . Are there any other entries that I need to check before making that change?

      2. As long as we have the second domain name (.info) I'd like to keep a seperate copy of the site set up for us to try new things on. That way we don't experiment and mess up the real site. I've got some 'assistants' who are even less familiar with web development than I am (which is saying a lot).

I know I can set up subfolders on the server and put other sites in them and point other Domain names to those folders. That's not a problem and, again, Go Daddy helps with that part. But what are the Joomla requirements? I'd love to back up the site and restore it to that folder but I have the sneaking suspicion that its just not that simple. :cheesy:

Do we have to install Joomla to the second location and then manually build a copy of our site there, or can we copy and paste between sites? I'm wide open and ready for advice.

    • 1. You should check the live_site variable in configuration.php to make sure it's working on your new server.

      2. Check out www.akeebabackup.com/

    • You've no need to use another domain name as a test site. You can create a folder in your joomla root called 'development' for example, and install your test site there. Just make sure you configure that folder not to be crawled by search engines. Your test site would then have the url: www.redstonewarrants.com/development Any changes you want to make could then be made on that site before rolling them out for public consumption on your live site.

That's the way I would go about it, but somebody else may have a better plan. As stated above, Akeeba makes backing up and restoring of sites very easy, and quick, although manually transferring sites isn't so difficult either.
