Directory site - a good idea?

As I am becoming closer to the finishing of a new website, I thought I would ask for some feedback on the concept of this site. (As the site is still in development I won't tell the name.)
The idea is to develop a website that will function as a extension directory (both commercial and non-commercial), webhosting directory, website directory (Joomla sites show offs), rescources, and articles/interviews regarding using Joomla as CMS/how to build good websites. and related info.
I know there is several websites that specialize in each area, but there seem to be very few that do all this on the same website and that's ad free. I would like this site to be ad free as I would like this website to be as objective as possible. And this objectivity will hopefully be recieved by the users votings and reviews.
But of course the website will also be commercial, and the income will be derived from affiliate links mainly from the webhosting directory. But even though I'll be using affiliate linking, the ranking will still be run the users ranking. So I could end up earning very little or some more. But then again, this isn't about making a lot of money, it's about making a good website that will help people to find webhosting, templates, extensions, and hopefully in time how-tos. It's about simplicity. Simplicity to find what you are looking for.

- It's not a bad idea but as you said there are already sites out there that tackle each of those areas. It would be hard and time consuming to make your site more attractive than those entrenched sites. And they can always wisen up and offer the same features that you do, like myspace copying facebook apps. If that doesn't sound like a problem then go for it.
