[SOLVED - for now :)]Drastic Measures

Posted 15 years 5 months ago
    • Ok, I need some thoughts from people who really know what they are doing...

I've having a load of trouble with one of my sites...I'd like to upgrade it to a new template, but it's giving me fits...

So, I had this idea to backup all my files and database, wipe the files (but leave the database), and reinstall a fresh rocketlauncher of the new template. I realize I will have to do some tweaking (such as module positioning), but...will this work? or will I mess up everything? Most importantly - will the database be readable by the new template and extensions?

      Hit me... :D

    • STOP!!

You are about to commit Joomla suicide!

You can't run the install with the RL on a DB that already has data in it... with or without the sample content....

While you may get away with swapping out the files, still the configuration.php will be lost...

You might be able to manage with some backing up of files, etc.... but you will be left in the same boat as if you apply a template, i.e., the positions won't be the same, the extensions will be different, etc.

      A) Apply the template to the existing install, install the extensions and go from there.

      B) Install the new template on your local host or is a sub directory of your site, then move your content (copy & paste).

      C) Migrate your current site to a new install. (For instructions, search joomla.org). Still, you'll need to move stuff around.

IMHO, it's best to bite the bullet, install the new template on your local host or sub directory, then move your data.

When you are satisfied with your new site, you can use JoomlPack to move the site to its final destination.

Seems like a lot of work, but it's quite straightforward, easier than trying to figure out where your content went, why it's not displaying properly, what extensions need to be switched, etc.

    • ok, that sounds doable (I'll probably go for option b) - but I've had trouble using joomla pack. How would I use that to move from the subdirectory to the main directory?

    • I don't know what problems you've had before, should be pretty easy...

When you are satisfied with the 'new' site, create a backup.

Delete the files from the old site that are in the root.

(After performing a back up, of course.)

Extract the zipped backup of the 'new' site to the root.

(Since you are developing in a sub directory, there's no need to upload the zipped back up, or unzip it and upload, etc.)

Create a new DB for the install, or drop all the tables from the 'new' site DB.

      Run the install...

    • Good luck, Maria.

Not an expert with JoomlaPack, but have used it a lot.

Lost of posts here on RT about its basic functions, so if you get stuck, let me know.
    • Thanks,

    • Retired, but build and run websites for organisations of school leaders and others - e.g. http://www.icponline.org, http://www.aspa.asn.au, http://www.appa.asn.au

    • I'm not an expert with JoomlaPack either (or with anything else about Joomla!!!), but I used it recently to move 4 sites from subdomains to full domains. I followed the instructions exactly, and it worked perfectly each time. I was absolutely terrified at the start of the processes. But it worked! :cheesy: Maria, try it step by step again, with the instructions in front of you, and I'm sure that you'll be OK.

And, as Jem says, ask here for help if you need it.
