- I use Freshbooks which gives the offer of pay by check, Paypal, Google Checkout, or many other payment portals. Really handy and not too expensive ($15 a month, I think is what I pay). I can track invoices and expenses and see when a client actually opens and checks the invoice. www.freshbooks.com

And don't transfer the site, rights, passwords, etc until you receive (the bulk of the) payment.

- Yeah, i have been screwed over many times like that in the past which made me give up developing. I only came back after 3 years to doing mostly voluntary work for charities apart from the odd hour from people i know.
