Problem with ampersands, & instead of &

hi guys.
Ok so my site looks ok and has had quite abit of work, based it on the afterburner and then changed it completely lol.
it helped me create the template i have now so thanks!
My problem is the news section is setup as normal, everthing is great but...
the article titles have a problem with the ampersands in the URL.
the read more link is fine tho?!?!
EXAMPLE (read more link)index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=72:plantec-holdings-becomes-southport-fc-new-main-sponsor&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=50
EXAMPLE (article title)index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=72:plantec-holdings-becomes-southport-fc-new-main-sponsor&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=50
the page still shows but the modules dont as the & is messing it all up.
Anyone know why this is happening??
I have SEF turned off in the main config.
