    Upgrading site/template

Posted 14 years 7 months ago
    • In the next few weeks I'll be upgrading my site from Terran Tribune to a new template (haven't decided yet). The site is reasonably large (400ish articles) with quite a few sections/categories. I've got a few weeks to plan because I can't go ahead until my organisation upgrades its 6000+ desktops to IE7 (they're on IE6 currently). Sadly (or not) no IE8 until about 20 years after I retire.

As so much as changed in the template world since the magnificent TT, what are the important steps and/or traps I should anticipate? Would it be better to start fresh and import the db into a new "site" or should I just (carefully) upgrade the current one - installing necessary components/plugins etc?

I've upgraded Joomla sites before but not on this scale or complexity (and I'm thinking Gantry issues etc here).

      Suggestions?

    • Use Akeeba Back Up to create a copy of your site.

      www.akeebabackup.com/software/akeeba-backup.html

Install it on local host, or a sub folder of your site.

Apply the new template (if you are not Gantry based now, use the bundle, if Gantry is installed, use the standalone) and the extensions.

Move your content around, as the TT Module positions are different than the Gantry Module Positions.

When you are satisfied with your dev site, use Akeeba to reverse the process, make a back up of the dev site and move it to the root.

    • Thanks JEM - that's a good plan. I use Akeeba as a matter of course, so it's all good. My TT isn't Gantry-ised, so I'll start with the bundle.
