Why can't I ever get this right?

  • Why can't I ever get this right?

    • I have been developing websites with RocketTheme themes for several years now. There is one particular topic that I struggle with on every new install/setup. I have a developer account with RocketTheme, so I typically use the Rocket Launcher version of a theme to setup a complete Joomla install with the theme all prepared with sample data. My brain disfunction always occurrs at this critical point though. I end up setting up the site with the wrong user perissions, and then uploading/installing components, modules, and plugins from the Joomla admin console never works from the start. I have to edit directory and file permissions every time. Also, everytime I think I understand when and I why to use the FTP Options in the joomla admin console, I end up having to turn it off because I get errors on upload or items partially install. I use DailyRazor.com as my hosting provider which is linux based. My question is.. would one of you Rocketeer gurus please re-write the "First Steps" to installing and setting up a Rockettheme/Joomla install using a RocketLauncher solution, but focus very clearly on which user I should use to upload the initial RocketLauncher zip file, define any options I should specify on 'unzip' and follow it up with whether or not to turn on the FTP options in Joomla and how to avoid the dreaded nobody user vs. root user vs. ftp options user problems?

The last time I setup a site (last month), I created a specific ftp user for the install (thinking that my mistake in the past was using the root user to upload and unzip the RocketLauncher file) and then instead I could setup in the FTP options of the Joomla admin panel (using the ftp user I created) hoping that would solve all permissions problems. It ended up the same way though, I had to turn off the FTP options to get any components to install using the admin panel. I had to edit the permissions of the components and modules directories until I was done setting those up and then I had to switch the permissions back for security of course.

I know Joomla is supposed to be easier than this, and I know I am messing myself up. I know there are many forum posts about this, but that is part of the problem. Many of those posts tell you to just change file permissions of certain directories, do your installs and then set those back. Some even offer shell scripts to make this easier, but come on people! Joomla is supposed to make this easy and it is not easy when you have to do all of that! So, I am turning to the RocketTheme gurus whom I know and trust and who have made me look like an expert web designer now for several years. I know this is more of a Joomla question, but I hope to find the answer here. I beseach you to clear this up for those of us that still struggle with it and please make this a sticky post when the answer is clear.

Also, please move this post if this is a bad place for it, it felt like a general question to me.
      Thank you.

    • There are many similar permission issue like yours and it is usually caused by the hosting. It seems your hosting doesn't have suPHP installed there.
With non- suPHP configurations, PHP runs as an Apache Module. It executes as the user/group of the webserver which is usually "nobody", "httpd" or "apache". Under this mode, files or directories that you require your php scripts to be able to write to need 777 permissions (read/write/execute at user/group/world level). This is not very secure because it allows the webserver to write to the file, it also allows anyone else to read or write to the file.

I would highly recommend you to ask your hosting to install and enable the suPHP on their server to solve that permission issue.

You can read more about Joomla and suPHP here

Nice. Let me know what your hosting say. If they don't want, I suggest you to move to better hosting as recommended by Joomla here

    • Not to give them a free commercial - but I decided to move to Siteground.. So far it has been very good. Their default permissions are perfect and installs of components and modules work out of the box on a Joomla install - WHY DIDN'T I SWITCH SOONER!!

How about using RocketLauncher which will be better for you as starting?

We have RocketLauncher packages which are provided as an additional option that in addition to the template.

RocketLauncher will install both Joomla and all of the demo sample content and images seen on our demo site for each individual template. This provides a way to get started quicker with the template, as our demos feature a lot of custom content examples and configuration that can help to give you ideas for using the template to its maximum effectiveness.

You can check the video tutorial about RocketLauncher installation here:
