Resizing images not working in template?

Hello,
Untill now i could figure out a lot by myself or find it on the net but this problem with resizing images is getting me a headache
I uploaded the images via ftp. I add them to an article and use the image button to resize them (i also used the mouse button to resize them). Everything works fine untill i installed the Grunge template (no idea if this also occurs in other templates too). I haven't installed any plugin/component or whatever. Basic installation with Rocketlauncher.
But the images keep their original size?? sure i can resize (with a phototool) all my images but that's a lot of work
Example:
due to the template i have static width of article = 900 pixels
i have 2 images 500 x 500, so they won't fit. I resize both images to 440 = 880 pixels.
In default joomla template i have 20 pixels left
In grunge template they don't resize and one is placed below the other.
Why is this happening?
