Mecado Theme j1.5 (New User Registration Not Woking)

Hi,
My first post so forgive me if I slip with rules of posting.
Specs:
Joomla 1.5
Virtuemart 1.1.9
Mercado Rocket Theme for joomla 1.5
My site has been being built for around 6 months ( yes I am solo & slowly going insane with it - it is still not live)
up to a week ago I was able to register new users - all would be well and emails recieved
Now when a new user attempts to register they are taken to a blank page
the address field ends in com_user
No acknowledgement to the user he has registered - no emails to admin
Yet the user is registered - it accepts that much but no emails are sent to user either but they are able to login - if they try - but i doubt they would think it worked.
I feel some files have been corrupted - after 3 days of working on this issue I came here
I no longer know what to do
I would happily re-install the template and believe that may well fix this issue but I have made so many edits for other bespoke requirements I am terrified I will just mess something else.
I suspected email settings may be an issue but reverted all to original and order emails are being sent out for registered accounts that were succesful before this issue.
No files I have found seem to have ever been modified in anway - despite searching for keywords I am unable to locate what files controls this function.
I really could do with a guiding hand and some advice
Any help greatly appreciated

i aso want to add that should a new user attempt to click the "register button" when field are not enterered correcty or using an already used login name etc nothing happens
no warnings
when this was once the case
