how to disable direct link to pdf

hello, i am having an issue with random people being able to create a direct link to download a pdf file without having to log in to my site. i do have docman installed on several other sites, but this one site has almost 2000 pdf files and i don't want to run docman for each one and recreate all those links for the archived pdfs.
i have read several htaccess forums but can't figure out how to implement the joomla authentication to allow logged in members to download the files
can someone please help with the proper htaccess code to use in a directory that checks if a user is logged in
