Anyway, I would skip Joomla 1.5 and use the latest 2.5 version and then rebuild the site.
That way you will get a more secure site and you can use all our newest templates as long as your server environment is up-to-date.
I know that rebuilding a site can be quite time-consuming and tedious but it's well worth it in the long run.
If you decide to rebuild (not by upgrading via JUpgrade) your site, don't just copy/paste the content from the old site. You never know if you get some of the old "hacking scripts" included when you do so and then your new site might be insecure.
You should also keep your server's software up-to-date so that it has the latest security patches and the latest features. You may ask your webhost about this.
One more thing to consider is how to secure the server, you might want to use RSFirewall and other tools that you can download on JED: extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-a-security/top-rated
