3 Newbie Questions : Brand new to everything! SOLVED
Posted 11 years 10 months ago
I am working thru the docs and how to install a template et al.
I have 3 what must be basic questions, but I have not been able to find them in the board. Probably too basic.
I hope someone will indulge me.
1. What is the best version to use? v2.5 or 3x
I have seen notes that it would be best to use Joomla 2.5 and wait for a version 3.5? But the templates are coded for 3x? I am starting with complete freedom to go either direction.
I gather 2.5 is better supported?
Does it make any practical difference? My normal proclivity would be to start with the most current versions.
2. Install into the root or subdir?
I read comments in other places that it didn’t matter, but there were loose threads about seemingly complex .htaccess rewrites and etc. to get the site to show without the dir.
3. Is it easy to move a site from one dir to another?
This is likely just not fully understanding the joomla layout... I am learning as fast as I can!
I have read conflicting posts (not on this board) that say it is easy to others with loads of conditions.
Is it easy to move a site to, say the root dir to release into production , having developed in a subdir.
Or should the entire thing be done in one place, ie, the root dir.
Answer 2 - I always go public root as it saves having to mess around with redirects. I will often add a RocketLauncher version in a sub-directory for refernce purposes only and delete when finished.
Answer 3 - I always use Akeeba Backup to take a backup which can then be installed on any server or different directory with minimum of fuss via the Akeeba Kickstart option. There are both free and pro versions available from
www.akeebabackup.com
