    Grave difficulty with server permissions?

Posted 16 years 9 months ago
    • Hi guys, well i was wondering somebody would know the answer to this.

I have installed templates with a different host in the past without a problem. Not the slightest.

I recently moved providers and the first thing i notice is that within the initial stages the CMS does not let me install sample data? Even if i skip this step it tells me in the end it could not write to the config file? Whereas with other hosts Joomla automatically writes to it and installs the sample data. Ive never needed to chmod or anything.

Anyways i installed Joomla in the end by manually entering the config details into the file and then uploading it whereas this should of been done automatically.

Secondly i try uploading a template, it does not work. I am required to chmod the template directory to 777 myself, even after uploading the template via the installer i notice once inside the ftp i cannot edit or delete any aspect of the folder or the contents inside. I cannot even chmod because permission is denied... so i decided to uninstall and it would not uninstall. After doing god knows what i managed to uninstall a template, but the folder remained which i deleted manually.

Then i decided to do the same thing again, and i was given the same problem. So i ftped the template and tried installing it.. it didnt work, so i had to chmod the template folder to 777 whereas ive never had to do this and even now im looking at a joomla installation on another host and i am able to install templates with the template folder permissions set to 755.

Anyways... so i set it to 777 to install the template.. i then wanted to edit a css file from within joomla but it does not allow me again.. so i had to go into ftp manually again and set the css files to 777. 775 does not work only 777 alows me to manually edit files via the CMS.

As you can see this is a big headache, i dont know what it is that is disabled that my host need to enable.. its clearly a problem on the server somewhere where permissions are restricted quite a lot. I really cannot be chmodding everything via ftp and then unchmodding its just too much. Prior to the installation i noticed the server met all parts of the Joomla installation, i seriously dont know what to ask my host to enable.

Any help would be much appreciated as i know this is not much of an RT problem.. however server/cms/installation problem which somebody may know the answer to.

      Cheers and thanks in advance.

Well first they didnt know much about it when i had created a previous ticket about sample data not installing because XML wasnt functioning... and said they were not sure if i will have problems down the line.

So now they have realised there is a problem and have said:

"This has to do with file ownerships and the way Apache/PHP are configured on the server. We can change file ownerships for you to alleviate the problem of not being able to access files."

So i will have to wait and see what they do.

    • Ask your hosting company to install Phpsuexec and turn on suexec.

    • Good advice from Raymond.

In the meantime, don't leave ANY file or folder at 777. Change back immediately after you have made your edits.
