Just Moved to VPS - It's Different

    • Hello,

I've been with shared hosting (GoDaddy) for a couple years. I'm not very competant with servers but I figured if I switched to a managed VPS I'd be alright. I have a couple questions if anyone can help me.

I have a VPS set up with Servint, I'm allowed 4 IP's. I set up an account on each and migrated a couple sites over. First problem I had was with permissions. Everything is unwritable so I just CHMOD'd the appropriate directories to 777 and that was fixed. It confused me a little though because on my shared hosting those directories reflect 775 and even 755, and Joomla has always showed these as writable without giving me any problems.

Also, when I access eXtplorer or JoomlaXplorer in the back-end, I can only see the following directories:

      root
      ea3_apache_build_htdocs
      suspended.page

Is there some server setting I should tell my provider to help me out with? Or am I missing out on something very basic in server management?

      - Bryan

    • Well you're in good hands at Servint :)

Be sure to read their forums.. there are a couple of very handy how-to's there, including important security ones.

Put in a support ticket explaining that you run Joomla and have permission issues so would like php rebuilt with phpsuexec. Sorta OT but ask them to install CSF (firewall from configserver.com) as well.

The phpsuexec will fix the permission problems.

In the meantime, if you have J1.5, use it's FTP layer to get around the permissions issue.

Whatever you do, at the end of the day DO NOT leave any folder or file at 777. Ever! Period! Fullstop! ! :)

    • I had exactly the same problem on my VPS and Servint just installed SuPHP instead phpsuexec; the permission issue seems to be corrected; I will test better at night.

      Thanks for the advice GollumX

    • I've run out of patience with our shared hosting which we resell (HostDime).

Too many problems to list here, but just as an example, ALL our PHP sites (ie Joomla) have been down for more than 10 hours now, following a 'security update', of which we had no prior warning.

So I'm interested in the recommendations about Servint's VPS solutions.

We have around 150 sites hosted (not all joomla).

How has the service been ?

    • I started with Servint 3 months ago with a SuperVPSx2; after the Hostgator nightmare, Servint is like the Paradise :D
Really good servers, very professional support (just ask and they help, install, uninstall, etc.); seems that they always send an email several days before any upgrade on your server...

My website needed a powerful and secure environment; Servint really seems to be the right place.
Finally, Servint is not the cheaper company but you get what you are paying for.

EDIT: the package I purchased is not listed on the website. If you need something "special" just ask them.
