All Internal links broken

  • All Internal links broken

Posted 16 years 6 months ago
    • Hi guys finally got my site up due to a very kind member on here. But have a strange problem
Have created a section and category and placed 4 articles in this menu. When you click on this section through the link in the frontpage it gives the 404 page not found error.
If I publish the articles on the frontpage they are viewable perfectly however.
Section and category placing are fine, access is set to public and SEO's are turned off in global settings.
Why can't I run any internal links?
      any advice gratefully received

    • You will want to navigate to Admin > Site > Global Configuration. There you will find a setting termed *Apache mod_rewrite*. Set this to Yes.

Then, navigate to the root directory of your Joomla install and rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess

In Joomla 1.5, it is usually best to enable this option as it drops the /index.php/ part of the URL and provides better SEF functionality.

    • Hi James thanks for the advice, I did exactly as you said but it made no difference.
It should be noted that in the root directory the file was already called "htaccess" without.txt on the end
I changed it to ".htacess" as you recommended
edit: the link also still has index.php in the address bar, I'm not sure why?

    • It can be a problem with some hosting providers, I experienced the same problem. Be sure that that your provider supports the mod_rewrite. Then try to set your .htaccess file like this:
      ##
      # @version $Id: htaccess.txt 5975 2006-12-11 01:26:33Z robs $
      # @package Joomla

      # @license http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html GNU/GPL
      # Joomla! is Free Software
      ##
      #####################################################
      #  READ THIS COMPLETELY IF YOU CHOOSE TO USE THIS FILE
      #
      # The line just below this section: 'Options +FollowSymLinks' may cause problems
      # with some server configurations.  It is required for use of mod_rewrite, but may already
      # be set by your server administrator in a way that dissallows changing it in
      # your .htaccess file.  If using it causes your server to error out, comment it out (add # to
      # beginning of line), reload your site in your browser and test your sef url's.  If they work,
      # it has been set by your server administrator and you do not need it set here.
      #
      # Only use one of the two SEF sections that follow.  Lines that can be uncommented
      # (and thus used) have only one #.  Lines with two #'s should not be uncommented
      # In the section that you don't use, all lines should start with #
      #
      # For Standard SEF, use the standard SEF section.  You can comment out
      # all of the RewriteCond lines and reduce your server's load if you
      # don't have directories in your root named 'component' or 'content'
      #
      # If you are using a 3rd Party SEF or the Core SEF solution
      # uncomment all of the lines in the '3rd Party or Core SEF' section
      #

      # RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^(/component/option,com) [NC,OR] ##optional - see notes##
      # May need to be uncommented.  If you are running your Joomla!/Mambo from
      # a subdirectory the name of the subdirectory will need to be inserted into this
      # line.  For example, if your Joomla!/Mambo is in a subdirectory called '/test/',
      # change this:
      # RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^(/component/option,com) [NC,OR] ##optional - see notes##
      # to this:
      # RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^(/test/component/option,com) [NC,OR] ##optional - see notes##
      #
      #####################################################
      ##  Can be commented out if causes errors, see notes above.

    • Thanks copied that verbatim into the .htaccess file but made no difference, any ideas what that means?

    • In Global Configuration, from the Admin Control panel, try to set:

      Search Engine Friendly URLsNo
      Use Apache mod_rewriteYes
      Add suffix to URLs No

but, once again, be sure that your provider supports mod_rewrite.

Thanks that is exactly the way mine is set up. So I need to contact my host? What if they don't support it...my site can't have any internal links? It seems a bit of a fundamental area not to support lol!

    • Is your provider a Joomla! hosting or a general Linux one?
