Avoiding 404's when building a new site on same server
Posted 15 years 11 months ago
Hi Everybody,
I don't know if I am posting this thread in the right Forum, but here's my issue.
For a couple of years I build a site for a client of mine with a Rockettheme template (Joomla 1.0.12). As to date the site is working properly. Also the site ranking is also very high.
Old URL:
http://www.evisol.com
Development URL:
http://evs.navnak.nl
Now the client wants a complete new website with the same content. I am building the new site with the latest Joomla version and again a Rockettheme-template. He wants to be the site at the same level of Google ranking. The site may not fall back in the google ranking. Also the client doesn't want the visitor getting a 404-error because of a google search result.
I've got a couple of questions regarding the above:
- Is there an option to avoiding 404-errors, because of the new site structure?
- Can I fix this with a sitemap (i.e. the joomap extension)?
- Is it also possible to make a custom 404-page instead of the standard 404 page?
- Is there some sort of tool to automatically avoiding 404-pages or create redirections to the new pages or homepage of the new site?
I know that I ask a lot but I think I am at the good location for the correct answers.

Don't know about the first two questions... beside saying set the site up with the same structure for the Menus, Articles, and Modules that currently exist....
On the first site you are using JoomSEF which has the option to make custom 404 pages.
Can you use a 3rd party SEF on the new site?
I don't know if there's a tool, but again, in JoomSEF, you can click through the site and if you find any errors, create custom redirects.
The JoomSEF forum may also be a good place to post these questions.

Hi JEM,
Thank you for your quick answer. It is indeed possible to create a custom 404 page or create redirects in JoomSEF especially for updating from an old to a new site.
I am going to place the question on the JoomSEF forum. Maybe anybody knows of an existence of any tool whatsoever.
