I've gone around in circles now and am hoping you smart developers will take pity.......
When I enable SEF by renaming the htaccess.txt to .htaccess i get problems. The hosting company has me placing this line of code in the htaccess.txt file:
Create a .htaccess file and place the following line AddType x-mapp-php5 .php in it.
So am i running into problems because I have both htaccess files in my root directory??
the host is 1and1.com
I am just not a PHP expert so your explanation is greatly appreciated.
here is the system information
PHP Built on: Linux infong 2.4 #1 SMP Tue Dec 18 22:34:10 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux
Database Version: 5.0.67-log
Database Collation: utf8_general_ci
PHP Version: 4.4.9
Web Server: Apache
Web Server to PHP interface: cgi
Joomla! Version: Joomla! 1.5.8 Production/Stable [ Wohnaiki ] 10-November-2008 23:00 GMT
User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0; GTB6; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; Media Center PC 5.0; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30618; OfficeLiveConnector.1.3; OfficeLivePatch.0.0)
First of all, you cannot have 2 .htaccess files in the same directory, it's impossible
Second, tell your host to upgrade to PHP5. To make SEF work you just need to:
Enable SEF in the Joomla backend.
Enable Apache mod_rewrite
Disable add suffix to URL's (it may conflict with some JS)
