Joomla security extensions - are they good or bad?

Hi! There are many security extensions in the Joomla extensions directory under 'Site Security' section, and I'm referring to firewalls and hacking prevention extensions such as RSFirewall,
or PHP Anti-Hacker by OSE, etc.
My question is, are such security extensions by third parties are being considered essential and useful, or are they actually run the risk of doing more harm than good?
Moreover, if my site would be sitting on a dedicated server (and not on a shared host), would it be recommended for me in that case to use such extensions for Joomla security, or is it that in that case I should be fine with the local security measures on the dedicated server (such as firewall) and is it in that case not so necessary to use added security extensions for Joomla?
(If it is necessary to use these Joomla extensions, I would appreciate any recommendation of the best extension, because there seem to be too many in offer...)

I wouldn't say that 3rd party security is not needed or advised but If you follow the guidelines, you'll be in very good shape.
Haven't used it myself, but RSFirewall has gotten some positive reviews.

I use the OSE Anti Hacker Suite.
It basically mirrors and automates tasks set out in the J! security checklist.
Support in the forums there is first rate from the developer.
