Should I start from scratch after being hacked?

My current Joomla site has been hacked through a back door. I am thinking of setting it up again from scratch. Can I easily use my database with a new template? I suppose there will be a lot of setting up of sections and categories as well as menus?
I just want to get an idea of the best way to proceed. My webhost has informed me there is a lot of malware in my existing site. So as of now they have taken it down.

Hello!
So sorry to hear this.
Hope you have a backup of your site to go back too.
What I would do is change to site offline.
then make sure you follow this steps
docs.joomla.org/Security_Checklist_7
then check VEL
docs.joomla.org/Vulnerable_Extensions_List
Then you can see how you were hack.
Was joomla up to date were all extension up to date?
If you use a backup and the extension that as an exploit then they will hack you again

Hello David !
I know the pain of starting over.However this would be the best way to go.
Start with core features.Use as less as possible extensions that you can.
Try to stay with well known extensions that are often updated.
Hold off on new extensions that look great until there been out at least a few weeks if there a way to exploit them it will be reported on exploits-db
As I mention do not use jos_ for your new db then you will be safer.
