How To: Create Database,Unzip Server Side,Password Protect

    • These tutorials are specific to the Cpanel hosting program. This is a very common general hosting program that allows for templating. There is a good chance you are using Cpanel if you are on shared hosting, but if you have questions, please ask your host.

Setting up your Database through Cpanel
        1. Open your Cpanel account for the domain you will be using.
        2. Find
"MySQL Databases" and open it. This brings you to the "MySQL Account Maintenance" page.
        3. You should now see a place that says
"New Database" which has a text box, that has a button that says "Create Database". In this text box, type in the name you want your database to have.
This image is hidden for guests.
Please log in or register to see it.

(Some hosts preface your database name with a standard prefix and may also limit the name you type in to 6, 7, or 8 characters. Make sure you note the full name of the database down that shows on the next page though.)
        4. Once you type in your name and click
"Create Database" you will be taken to a confirmation page letting you know it was created. Just click "Back" to bring you back to the "MySQL Account Maintenance" page.
        5. Again, from the
"MySQL Account Maintenance" page, find "Username" and "Password", each with their own text box and the button "Create User". Fill in a Username that may also be prefaced by a standard user value depending on your host, and choose a password.
(Passwords are very important to protecting your site from hackers! Choose one that is at least 8 characters, make it alphanumeric, and use both lowercase and capital letters for better security!)

Please log in or register to see it.
        6. After clicking
"Create User" you will be brought to a confirmation page stating that the user has been created. Click "Go Back" to be brought back to the "MySQL Account Maintenance" page.
        7. Now that your Database and your user are created, you need to connect the two. From the main
"MySQL Maintenance" page, you will see a section called "Add Users To Your Databases:". In this section, choose the User you just created from the dropdown for user and choose the database you just created from the database dropdown. Under priviledges, make sure the "ALL" box is checked, then click the "Add User to Database" button.

Please log in or register to see it.
        8. Once again you will be brought to a confirmation page and may click
      "Go Back".
Congratulations! Your database is now set up and ready to be used for a new installation!

    • Upload your RocketLauncher package or Joomla package and unzip using the server side program.
        1. Visit your Cpanel account for the domain you are going to be installing the software on.
        2. Click on
"File Manager". This will be located in different places depending on the template your host or you have chosen for Cpanel. This opens the file manager in a new window.
Important Note: Clicking on the directory icon opens the directory view for that particular folder. Clicking on the directory name brings up options on the right column menu for adjustments to make to that directory.

Please log in or register to see it.
        3. Click on the Directory icon for
      "public_html".
The directory name "public_html" is fairly standard as the root directory for your domain. Please use whatever is the root directory for your domain if it is different.
        4. Click on the
      "Upload file(s)" link.

Please log in or register to see it.
Then click "Browse" and choose your zip or other compressed file to be uploaded. Then click "Upload".
        5. You will now see the uploaded file in the directory listing. Click on this file name.
        6. From the right column menu that appears after having clicked on the zip file's name, choose
"Extract File Contents". A new window will open showing all the extracted files. You can close this window.
        7. Back on the original directory view of the
"File Manager", you can click the "public_html" link on the top of the list that shows the breadcrumb view like this "/ public_html / (Current Folder)". This refreshes your view of the directory and shows the extracted files.
Congratulations! You may now continue with your installation process by visiting the domain where you have just uploaded these files!

    • Password Protect a directory using Cpanel
        1. Login to the Cpanel account of the domain containing the directory you want to password protect.
        2. Click on
"Password Protect Directories". This brings you to the "Allow access only to authorized users" page.
This image is hidden for guests.
Please log in or register to see it.
        3. From this page, click on the directory icon to view what's inside the directory or click on the directory name to apply a password to that particular directory. Let's assume we're clicking on the directory name of
"public_html" and password protecting the entire directory.
        4. From this page, at the bottom you will see two text boxes allowing you to type in a
"username" and a "password". Fill these boxes in and click the "Add/Modify authorized User" button.
This image is hidden for guests.
Please log in or register to see it.
        5. You will then be brought to a confirmation page stating the username and password you have chosen. Please verify them and click
      "Go Back".
        6. Under
"Active Users" you will now see your chosen username. You may add multiple usernames and passwords in this manner so that you don't have to give out personal information. You can have one for yourself and one for your client or partner for example.
        7. Now, from this page showing the Active usernames, in the section above with the lock icon, check this box,

Please log in or register to see it.

leave the next text box blank, then click "Save".
        8. You will be brought to a confirmation page and may click
      "Go Back".
        9. When you revisit the
"Password Protect Directories" page through your Cpanel account, you should now see a lock icon next to the directory you protected (
This image is hidden for guests.
Please log in or register to see it.
), if not, try these steps again.
Congratulations! You now have a password protected directory!

    • Hi - I've never had a problem on cpanel, love it! My problem is that I'm trying to help a client set up his, and he's on a host that uses plesk instead of cpanel - and I don't see a file extractor in the file manager of plesk. I need to manually check Owner/Group and Permissions on all files and folders because I think they've gotten messed up. Any advice? I'm not sure what I should be setting everything to. I see that the Owner and Group are two different names and on my own joomla sites (set up through cpanel on a different host) they're both the same.

Should all my folders be 755? I'm also seeing that some files are 644 and others aren't. Can you advise? I'm using one of the gantry sites.
